How does Web Hosting work?

Websites are built using an ever increasing array of programming codes, this code is inserted into pages along with images, databases, scripts and more. After your website design and content is finished, in order for it to be publicly accessible it needs to be hosted within web hosting infrastructure.

Web Hosting is space on a web server located in one of our datacentres, each of which are connected to every other datacentre in the world. The web server’s job is to provide your website files to anyone who requests them, such requests usually from an internet browser program, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari.

The web server receives a request and promptly sends the website to the person who requested it. The distributed power and security of our webservers ensures you get a high degree of availability and uptime.

Our webserver infrastructure uses a principle called cloud computing for greater performance and reliability. The machines are linked together in a way that distributes memory and resources, meaning that even if one of them malfunctions or goes offline temporarily, its work continues uninterrupted, meaning your services remain online.

Our Web Hosting solutions makes extensive use of SSD memory in our server arrays. SSD, or Solid State Drives, is the latest-generation of computer memory, where information is stored magnetically in a non spinning model, instead of storing information on a rotating disk like traditional hard drives. With no laser searching for the information on the disk, SSD memory loads up to 300% faster than traditional hard disks.

Can I upgrade my plan at any time?

Yes. You can start with one of our smaller hosting plans and upgrade it only as more resources become necessary with the growth of your site and usage. Our plans give you the flexibility to grow and continue to develop your sites as much as you need to.

You can request the upgrades you need at any time within your Account Manager in just a few clicks and then you will have more hosting resources available for your site. This process does not require you to transfer files - everything is done automatically. Simply activate the upgrade and your account will be expanded according to your choice.

What is shared hosting?

All of our hosting services are shared Web Hosting, meaning that each server hosts a number of sites for different users, sharing the resources. Web servers are so powerful they can hold up to 2000 websites, allowing us to deliver optimal value without affecting performance.

Unlike certain other providers, we do not load up or over subscribe our machines until they cannot handle any more services. Our maximum capacity, both in terms of hard drive and memory usage, tops out at 80%. This means that, no matter what is happening, your website can handle large spikes in traffic without losing performance or availability.

This limit in usage of resources rather than number of customers means that we can maintain the responsiveness of our infrastructure and keep your website and services running smoothly and quickly. This methodology ensures that we do not have large numbers of resource-hungry websites, applications and scripts running on the same servers. Each machine is only used to a reasonable capacity.

Backing up your website?

We keep backups for internal reasons, however, we recommend to clients to keep their own backups independently and ensure that your hosting account’s content, site files, scripts and applications are all backed up correctly.

Backups should be performed routinely and regularly. If your site is static or does not see much traffic, then these can happen weekly, but for more traffic-heavy sites that may be updated often, daily backups are recommended. Our hosting management system, cPanel, has a simple backup feature that you can use to download a complete copy of your site, databases and any other contents of your hosting account.
